The polar bear is, with the Kodiak bear, the biggest of the ground carnivores and he appears at the top of his food pyramid. It is a semi-aquatic mammal, the survival of which depends as well on its hunting on the ice floe as in the water. His life expectancy is from 15 to 30 years. Males weigh approximately 800kg in the adulthood, (the record is 1 102kg) and measures between 2m50 and 3m up. In reality, hairs are not white: they are pigmented, thus colorless, translucent and hollow; it is the reflection of the visible light on the internal surface of these hollow hairs that reveals them whites. Under its white fur, the polar bear has a completely black skin what allows him to absorb the bright energy in a optimal way. Charismatic animal, the polar bear has a strong cultural impact on the Inuit people, which still depend on his hunting to survive. Inuit are the only ones who have the right to hunt him still. Some of them sell every year, their hunting right to wealthy American hunters... This species only lives on the ice floe around the North Pole, at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. Because of the global warming and of the upheaval of it's housing environment, the populations of polar bears are globally in decline and the sospecies) is considered as endangered. We consider that the population of polar bears would be between 20 000 and 25 000 individuals.
